Triples

Triples is a puzzle game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Moves are made by matching three tiles from a board of twelve. The object is to accumulate the highest score you can given a fixed starting number of moves.

Play

Each tile has four properties: shape, color, number, and background.

Each property can have one of three values. (Theme shown: shiny)
Color:

Shape:

Background:

Number: 1, 2 or 3

Select three different tiles by touching them (touching a selected tile will unselect it.)

For each property, the three tiles must have either all the same values, or all different.

The more dimensions the tiles differ on, the more points scored for the match. (Theme shown: Shiny)

These tiles are a simple match, and will score fewer points:

(Why? backgrounds all the same; object shape all the same; one object on each tile; object colors all different.)

These tiles are a more difficult match, and will score more points:

(Why? backgrounds all different; object shapes all different; number of objects all different; object colors all different.)

These tiles are not a match:

(Why? two of one background, one of another; two of one object shape, one of another; same number of objects on each tile, and this is the only correct dimension; two of one object color, one of another.)

Themes

A few different themes are available in the preference panel. You can make Triples even tougher by having the game select a random theme for you every time it starts (that way you won't become acclimated to any single theme.)

You can include or exclude themes from the random list using the preferences.

Controls

Refresh
Refresh the board with all new tiles. This is to be used when there are no possible moves on the board.

If you correctly see that there are no moves and hit refresh, you gain extra points and extra moves. If you are wrong, you lose points (in easy mode) or the game ends (in difficult mode.) This is the only way to get extra moves.

Hint
Hint - show a possible move (if any.) Costs one move and some points.

Preferences
Set preferences (easy mode, default sound to on or off, themes, show high scores, show this file.)

Easy mode

Easy mode:
The game starts in easy mode, which randomly sets one value the same in each tile (for instance, every tile will have the same background, or all objects will be the same color.) This makes it much easier to make a match. Once you have mastered easy mode, you can set the "more difficult" preference to "on."

Scoring

top | play | themes | controls | easy mode | scoring | levels | Scoreloop

Each three tiles removed scores a varying number of points, depending on difficulty (fewer points across the board in easy mode.)

If the three tiles are only different in one dimension (say, only the background is different, like the first example in the play section) the match scores the fewest points. If all dimensions are different, the match scores the maximum points.

Frequently, there is more than one possible match on the board (almost always, in easy mode.) You can maximize points by finding the most difficult possible move.

Easy mode scoring:

A "hint" costs points and one move (whether or not there are any valid moves.)

If there are no moves left, "refresh" is free; otherwise "refresh" costs one move and some points.

When you are out of moves, you win. In easy mode, you can't lose (but it is possible to end up with a negative score.)

Difficult mode scoring:

In difficult mode, you can lose.

A "hint" costs one move and significant points (whether or not there are any valid moves.) Using "hint" allows you to continue the game if you really don't see a move, but there is one. Hints are expensive.

If there are moves left, and you use "refresh", you lose.

However, if you have correctly deduced that there are no moves, you get some extra moves and a lot of points for a "refresh". You get the most reward for the most difficult task - detecting that there are no more moves.

When you are out of moves, you win.

Your top five high scores are saved, whether or not you won.

Levels

top | play | themes | controls | easy mode | scoring | levels | Scoreloop

Triples has ten levels, five in easy mode and five in hard mode.

The main difference is the number of moves and the scoring; the higher the level, the more moves you get and the more points each match is worth. Hints also cost more, and (in difficult mode) refreshing a no-moves board gives you more moves and more points.

You can switch levels from the preferences / levels page, or from the scores page.

To see specific point values, choose the difficulty and level from the levels preference page.
